Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in accordance with a New York state act "to provide for designating the positions and movements of the troops of the State of New York on the battlefield of Gettysburg." Contains itineraries, rosters, and casualty lists of the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia, and reports of monument dedication ceremonies. Contains maps in each volume related to the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Commission was authorized by the New York State Legislature to determine the positions and movements of New York organizations engaged in the Civil War and to erect memorials, monuments, and markers. Daniel E. Sickles chaired the New York Monuments Commission from 1886 to 1912, when he was removed by an embezzlement scandal.
