Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Regarding the Quasi-War with France, Washington's support for the Administration and acceptance of commander in chief. Signed: "D.R. Slade" in upper right corner. Washington's letter is dated July 17, 1798 from Mount Vernon. The document is also dated July 13, 1798 from Mount Vernon.
