Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Regrets informing Lafayette that he cannot give him an answer on the loan he requested. Remarks "There is no country where money exists at all that is so unproductive of lenders as this is." States that he hopes Lafayette will have more luck in Europe. Discusses some issues involving the location of Lafayette's land.
