Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Two hair samples folded into a piece of paper on which is written, "My father's and my mother's hair, C. Leuty." This item was originally housed in Gideon Savage's wooden chest (GLC01450.013.02) with others decimalized in GLC01450.013. Sarah Savage was Gideon's wife. Savage served as a Corporal of Artillery and Artificer for the Connecticut Continental Line in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.
