At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Silas Wodell writes that the owner of the Livingston Papers has accepted Henry B. Livingston's offer of $150 to purchase them. He adds: "I was greatly surprised that they would listen to the offer, but I am informed that the owner of the papers has a Judgment against her and is sadly pressed for money."
