Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Fisher as Surgeon in Charge of General Hospital No. 3 in Lynchburg, Virginia. Says the regulations "are published for the government and guidance of the Patients of this Hospital." Regulation topics include: getting full name, company, and regiment of patients, passes, curfews, patient cleanliness, patient behavior, hospital property, and liquor. Has printed border of tree leaves and vegetation. Embossed stamp of "Essex Institute" with seal in corner. Some water staining.
