Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Medal features James Madison's profile on front and the words "James Madison President of the U.S. A.D. 1809." Designer is unknown. Verso features two hands shaking, a tomahawk crossed with a pipe, and the words, "Peace and Friendship," designed by John Reich.

Indian peace medals were distributed to Indian tribes by the U.S. government as part of diplomatic relations.
