Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Indian peace medal with James Monroe's profile on front, with the words "James Monroe President of the U.S. A.D. 1817," designed by Moritz Furst. Verso features two hands shaking, a tomahawk crossed with a pipe, and the words, "Peace and Friendship," designed by John Reich.

Furst and Reich both worked as engravers at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Indian peace medals were distributed to Indian tribes by the U.S. government as part of diplomatic relations.
