Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

First page signed by Charles Cocks and Benjamin Langlois, of the Office of Ordnance. Includes a signature "Amherst," Jeffrey Amherst, a general in the British army (no first name is written). Certifies that George Pratt, gunner of the sloop Shark, has given an account of the expense of gunner's shares from 6 May to 19 November 1776. A note on second page, signed by Robinson N. Bowman, states that the certificate for Pratt is on the other side and informs that Mrs. Pratt will call on him for her marriage certificate. Also mentions paying a man named Clark his wages.

Hunter was a British naval officer.
