Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Johnston's younger sister Estelle informs him that she and her sister Mary study very hard, and also describes how his boat and pony are at home. Followed by a note from Johnston's mother, who states that Cambridge is quite ill, and also tells Johnston that she has sent him clothes and money for the winter.
