At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Matilda writes that she hopes that Mary's marriage will not be the last in the family, as she would like to see Johnston marry as well. However, she regrets that the marriage of her siblings has separated the family and carried them to different parts of the country.
