Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document is a large printed certificate for Joseph Curtis, with seal, confirming that he is a member of the New York Society for Promoting the Manumission of Slaves. It it signed by Cadwallader Colden as President and William Van Hook as Secretary of the Society. Engraved and written by Peter Maverick. Accompanied by a paper seal.

These are to Certify that Joseph Curtis is a Member of the New York Society for promoting the Manumission of Slaves, and protecting such of them as have been or may be liberated; Instituted in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty five; and Incorporated the nineteenth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the thirty second.
In Testimony whereof we have affixed our hands, and the Seal of the Society, this twentieth day of February 1812
