Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

1st Ed., 1st issue. Printed by William and Thomas Bradford. Front & back boards off. This 1st issue lacks the 12-page petition to the King in the 2nd issue (see Broadside, GLC 1671). Included adoption of a Declaration of Rights, Address to the People of Great Britain, and an Address to the Inhabitants of the Province of Quebec, an the resolution to reassemble 10 May 1775 if liberties had not been restored. The famous seal on the titlepage depicts twelve hands reaching out to support a column topped with liberty cap, and resting on the Magna Carta. (Georgia did not send a delegate.)
