Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Collateral. Modern fine press reprint (no. 164) by the Saunder Studio Press, with an introduction by Lindley Bynum and illustrations by Ruth Saunders. Facsimiles of the titlepage and beginning reprinted from the Huntington Library copy. This is the first separate printing in book form. It originally appeared in the American Register, 1808. It is said to be the earliest first-hand account of California by an American.
