Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Granted by Thomas Lord Culpeper, Baron of Thoresway. Signed as Royal Governor of the Colony of Virginia. Gives detailed descriptions of the boundaries of the property based on geographic and territorial landmarks. Also signed by Clerk of the Council and of the General Court Edward Chilton. Chilton would coauthor "The Present State of Virginia" with James Blair and Henry Hartwell. Notes on verso. Features paper seal.
