Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving entitled "Landing of Henrick Hudson" dated 1857. Depicts the landing of Hudson and his men in 1609. Native Americans wait on the shore to greet them. Published by Martin, Johnson & Co, New York, from the original painting by Robert Walter Weir. At the time of engraving this painting was in the possession of Gulian Crommelin Verplanck.
