Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Introduces an American newspaper man, Albert Pulitzer, to the American foreign minister to France, Morton, as Pulitzer will be travelling abroad. Also asks Morton to extend "any attention or courtesy you may be enabled, consistenly with your duties..." to Pulitzer. Written on executive stationery with header: Executive Mansion, Washington. Stationery watermarked as Royal Irish Linen Marcus Ward & Co. Number 143 is underlined and written in the upper left hand corner. One black and white bust engraving of Chester A. Arthur included.

Morton was the American minister to France from 1881-1885 and the vice-president under Benjamin Harrison from 1889-1893. Pulitzer was the brother of Joseph Pulitzer, of the journalism prize. Marcus Ward & Co. was an Irish paper making company, producing primarily greeting cards.
