Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes President George Washington's third State of the Union Address, delivered 25 October 1791. Among other topics, Washington discusses problems between Native Americans and settlers on the Western frontier, a new tax on distilled alcohol, the 1790 census results, a loan from Holland, and the French Revolution. Contains local and foreign news, public announcements, and notices of sale. Partially torn along the middle seam.

Claypoole is credited with being one of the earliest printers of the Constitution; he is possibly the Constitution's first printer.
