At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John André was the aide-de-camp of Sir Henry Clinton, the British commander-in-chief. He was involved in the treason plot of Benedict Arnold. As a consequence, he was captured by the American forces and hanged as a spy in Tappan, New York, on October 2, 1780.
