Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The map covers the western United States, with Washington, Oregon, California, Utah, New Mexico, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, and Arkansas. Published in New York by George P. Putnam. Owned by John Moore (1826-1907), an army surgeon with the Utah Expedition of 1857-1860.

For over 60 years the Colton family was one of the most prolific and successful publishers of maps and atlases in the U.S. Joseph Hutchins Colton began his printing business in 1831 in New York City, with his first imprint in 1833. In the beginning, he reissued maps created by others, relying on purchased copyrights. In 1846 Colton produced his first wall map. By 1850, the Colton firm was one of the primary publishers of guidebooks and immigrant and railroad maps. In 1855 he published his first atlas, Colton's Atlas of the World.
