Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Full title "To the Right Honourable Sir Jeffrey Amherst Knight of the Bath and Lieutenant General of his Majesty's forces etc., This map of the Province of New York is humbly Inscribed by His most obliged humble servant John Montresor, Engineer." Includes lower New York State, Connecticut, upper New Jersey and Long Island. Also shows the Livingston Family manor holdings. Framed to 92.7 x 111.8 cm. "P. Andreus, Sculpter" appears in lower right corner.
