Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Nellie opens the letter by writing out a Bible passage, a quote from Karl Barth, a quote from Bishop Palmer, and a quote from John Bailey. She expresses optimism about her and Davis' children. She says she will be going to an Italian Methodist church later with part of the group, while the other part goes to an Episcopal church. She ends the letter saying she has received no mail in Italy.
