Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The letter is written on blue air mail paper with postage from England, addressed to Spokane, WA and the return address is Paris, France. Nellie indicates she is writing from London, England and continues her letter later that same day from Stratford. She describes the tourist outings her and her companion are enojying including plays and meals, and describes hotel accomodation in Stratford as "second class." Nellie lists where she is traveling next in England and writes about the weather. She affirms she has received six letters from home and comments on the family news she has received.
