Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: Hartsuff writes to his daughter at boarding school. He reports that nothing has changed in the "situation" with the Indians since his letter of 11/27. There is a group, numbering in the thousands, camped around them on the Agency and professing friendship. There is a more substantial unfriendly group camped thirty miles away. Not a shot has yet been fired.
