Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: Hartsuff reports on the capture of the last of the "hostiles" and the prospect for their delivery to Pine Ridge the next day. Then he turns to the more important business of warning his daughter against the dangers of flattery and vanity - both of which can "ruin" a young woman.
