Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: Hartsuff opens with the speculation that his address may be "Pine Ridge, &c. &c." forever and goes on to complain about the speed with which the Indians continue to deliberate and negotiate the settlement. He also asserts that peace is the only alternative, for resistance, while they are all on the reservation and under the gun, would mean "annihilation."
