Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the nomination of Abraham Lincoln as President by the Republican National Convention, which convened May 1860 in Chicago, Illinois. Reports on the reaction of citizens in New York City to the announcement of Lincoln's nomination, including the firing of guns in several public squares. Contains an article describing the nomination of Hannibal Hamlin as Lincoln's Vice President. Also advertises the printing of such materials as "The Life and Public Services of the Hon. Abraham Lincoln" and "The Life and Speeches of the Hon. Abraham Lincoln", with a steel portrait. Among various other reports, includes articles on The Jersey City Murder, the sale of liquor on Sundays, congressional news, and Napoleon III's possible attack on the Rhine.
