Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Series of questions, in the hand of James Madison, Sr., "Your answers to the following will oblige your affect't servant James Madison," with answers in the hand of Edmund Pendleton. No date, probably early 1760's. All concerning land deeds or militia questions. Each answer signed "EP", and signed in full at bottom. #99.006 was originally separate and counted by Henkel as a separate piece.
