Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Convicted of "keeping a disorderly house" [a term once used to refer to prostitution]; sentenced to 2 months imprisonment with an additional 2 months imprisonment added after being unable to pay the $25 fine also accrued. Pardoned after serving almost 2 months of the term. No reason for pardon mentioned. (c/s Joseph McKenna)
