At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Countersigned by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. Davis was convicted in Massachusetts. No reason given for pardon.

In the name of the United States -
To all to whom these Presents shall come. -
Whereas Samuel Davis, late of the State of Massachusetts, at a district Court, holden for the United States within the said State, hath been duly convicted of unlading two bales of cotton without a permit, contrary to law, and he hath been adjudged to pay a fine of one thousand dollars; And whereas the said Samuel Davis appears to be a proper object of pardon; Now know ye, that I have thought fit to pardon, and do accordingly pardon, him the said Samuel Davis for the offence aforesaid, and do also remit unto him the fine aforesaid; so far as the United States may be interested therein. -

Given under my hand and the Seal of the United States at Philadelphia, this [inserted: twenty first] day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand, seven hundred and ninety two, and of Independence the sixteenth. -
