At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Printed "In the field" on cloth. Black and white lithograph depicts Northern Georgia. Compiled under the direction of William E. Merrill, Chief Topographical Engineer, Washington, D.C. Margedant was Captain and Superintendent of the Topographical Engineers Office, Washington, D.C. According to a previous note, this item accompanied the commission of Brig. Gen. Nathaniel C. McClean.
