At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph taken by United Press International dated April 4, 1964. Image is of demonstrators lying down in the road outside the Flushing Meadow World's Fairgrounds. There are multiple police officers pictured as well. The caption explains that police soon removed the protestor and that 28 people were arrested including the leader of the school boycott movement, Rev. Milton A. Galamison.
