Signed by principal lighting engineer, Charles L. Clarke. Ink inscription on mount reads, "Edison Machine Works, Goerck St., New York City, Photo, 1881." Edison established his Machine Works factory in 1881 to produce dynamos and other electrical machinery for use in his Edison Electric Light Company plants around the country. Due to increasing demands on the factory, Edison Machine Works moved in 1886 from its initial location in New York City to Schenectady, NY. In 1889, Edison Machine Works merged with Edison's other electric companies to form Edison General Electric, which took the shortened name of General Electric in 1892.
