Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes six sons of (Polly or Marry) Tucker Leaming and D. M. Leaming. Inferring from their clothing, this photograph was likely taken, along with GLC05080.05, at a December 1860 family reunion. According to a list of names written in blue ink on verso, this photograph depicts Rusle, Edward, Mack J., Charles, Silas, and Jude Leaming.

Mack J. Leaming later served as 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry at Fort Pillow, Tennessee, and was present at the controversial battle which took place there in April 1864.
