Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows Abraham Lincoln, turned slightly to his left. Inscription on verso: "An Historical Treasure . . . . " followed by a lengthy explanation of the provenance of the photo. The image was taken in Springfield, Illinois just before Lincoln's departure for Washington, D.C. Additional inscription on verso: "H. W. Fay, DeKalb, Ill."
