At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Revolutionary War broadside encouraging enlistments by assuring recruits that their term of service would be short, permissing payment in lieu of service, but also empowering the commanding officer of each Militia, or the local Committee of Safety, "to muster the militia, when and so often as they may respectively find it necessary, in order for the obtaining the Quota designed."
