Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Young Robert thanks his uncle for some shoes, and notes that he hopes to master the French language soon. P.2 contains a letter written to the Mayor regarding trade with the Indians and relations with the French in Canada. The letter is not signed, and is dated April 1725, Albany. Docketed on address leaf.
