Title continues, "at Appomattox C.H., in which Gen. Lee surrendered to Gen. Grant." Depicts 18 men present, mostly officers in uniform, including Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. Published by the Major & Knapp. Eng. Mfg & Lith Co., 71 Broadway.
Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia on 9 April 1865. In 1846 Napoleon Sarony opened a lithographic business in partnership with Henry Major. Until 1853, it was called 'Sarony and Major'. From 1857 to 1864, the company name was expanded to, 'Sarony, Major & Knapp' but only Major and Knapp are listed on this lithograph. The company was later called the American Lithograph Co.
