At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks Carswell to extend a line of credit to John H. Eaton on Jackson's behalf. Eaton was travelling to Philadelphia in order to publish his Life of Jackson.

John H. Eaton wrote The Life of Andrew Jackson, a biography of the General. Later became a Senator from Tennessee. Appointed Secretary of War by Jackson, but was forced to resign during the Petticoat Affair.

...shortly after the purchase of the Negroes by Major A. J. Donelson, [&] A. Jackson jnr the latter desposed of his interest in that purchase to Stockly Donelson, who became liable for all sums of money on said contract that A. Jackson jnr was liable for having stepped into the [inserted: shoes of the] said A. J. jnr. It has been owing to the default of Stockly Donelson in not complying [punctually] with his engagement that any delay in payment has happened.
