Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

25th Congress, 2d session, no. 49. Norvell agrees with John C. Calhoun's famous resolution establishing the orthodox state rights position (GLC00267.021.01). "Resolved, That the government of the United States is a national government only for the general purposes specified in the Federal constitution: That the States of this Union, in all their reserved rights and powers, are separate, independent, and sovereign political communities..."
