Slavery and the Making of America

James Oliver Horton, the Benjamin Banneker Professor of American Studies and History at George Washington University, and Lois E. Horton, Professor of Sociology at George Mason University, have collaborated on several books, including In the Hope of Liberty: Culture, Protest, and Community among Northern Free Blacks, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Slavery and the Making of America explores the human dimension of the inhumane institution of American slavery and traces the rise of Jim Crow as a new means of racial control.
