At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Program for the 13th Annual Music Festival held at Virginia State College. The first page is a title page and lists when different types of musical groups will perform. The groups all appear to be high schools. At the top of the page is written, "E. Geraldine Williams 221 E. Harrison Ave. Roanoke, 12, Va. and "Please return". Subsequent pages lists the schools performing, what pieces they are performing and who pieces are by. Comments have been written beside each piece, on the quality of the performance. Most are one word but some are more detailed descriptions of the performance. Addison High School in Roanoke, Virginia is listed as a "Class A" school on page 11. Some of the schools on this list are underlined with a key below that lists a guide to understanding notations. Addison High School is listed on page 12 having sung "Souls of the Righteous". Beside that is written "SUPERIOR!" and below is written "required no. In these Delihtful, Pleasant Graves, - Purcell". The list of performances ends on page thirteen. Page fourteen lists the members of the Music Festival Committee. Page fifteen lists upcoming events at the college.
