Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Replies to a letter from an unknown Lord and other gentlemen. States "I will by the first opportunity informe his Majty of what you write concerning the Soldiers, both in the Downs and at Harwick, and shall speedily send you his Resolution thereupon." Writes that George I, King of Great Britain, intends "the Augustine shall goe out with Sr John Narbrough, and to that purpose I have sent you his Majty Orders for Victualling her in which I advise you will cause all possible dispatch to be used...
