Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A photograph of a Wiard rifle and its caisson. Approximately 60 of these artillery pieces were made at O'Donnell's Foundry in New York City. 6-pounder and 12-pounder guns were made. "U.S. 6 Pdr WIARD" stenciled in white on the front of the caisson. Other artillery limbers in background.
