Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Edward Reed, the state librarian and editor of the Pennsylvania archives, certifies that William Thompson served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Continental Line. With cover letter from H. Livingston Rogers to Johnston Livingston, 21 February 1901, New York. He states that the enclosed report gives a valid record of his great grandfather William Thompson.
