At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain Cole proposes a seven-point plan for a convoy of ships to sail to the plantations of America. The captain details which ships should go to which section of colonies and how many Navy ships should go with them for protection. He also includes date that they should leave by in the case of ships from Jamaica which he says should leave no later than the 10th of February.
