Please consult our Fee Schedule for information on pricing. When requesting publication rights, please allow 1–2 weeks for processing and invoicing. Permissions requests are processed in the order in which they are received.
The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
Completion of this request does not constitute permission to publish. Publication rights are granted in the Publication Agreement. Credit must always be given in the appropriate format, as specified in the Publication Agreement. The Gilder Lehrman Institute will provide permissions electronically via an emailed PDF attachment. Allow 2 to 4 weeks to process the request once the Gilder Lehrman Institute receives the signed agreement. All fees are non-refundable and subject to change without notice. Copyright - Documents, photographs, art work, microfilm, recordings, and transcripts owned by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History may be protected by copyright, trademark, or a related interest not owned by the Institute. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to determine whether any such rights exist, and to obtain necessary permission for use.
