FLORA ANN S. HINDS handed this letter to her brother,
Claude Herbert Smith, as he boarded a bus to leave for
active duty in World War II. Smith went on to fly several
combat missions on a B-24 bomber and twice survived being
shot down. After the war, he went to college under the
G.I. Bill and married his childhood sweetheart. He will
