Born in 1756, LUCY FLUCKER married the Boston bookseller
Henry Knox at the age of eighteen. In 1775, Henry went
to serve in the Continental Army, where he later rose
to become a general and, after the Revolution, Washington’s
Secretary of War. Deserted by her Loyalist parents, Lucy
was left to raise two small children on her own. Throughout
the Revolution and afterwards, the couple corresponded
almost daily, and their letters are a testament to their
devotion to each other. Get
