P.J. ROE was a soldier in the Mexican
War, fought between the United States and Mexico from
1846 to 1848. Americans were bitterly divided over this
conflict, due to the possible expansion of slavery into
the newly acquired territories. Roe writes to his girlfriend
Sarah in Charleston, Indiana, lamenting the loss of several
soldiers to the measles, reassuring her of his love, and
announcing the end of the war. He states, "I have
nothing of importance to communicate . . . other than
news of peace." Get
